New 2016 Art Rubric

Beginning in February 2016, any rubric-based art projects will utilize a new and improved assessment tool. We believe that the language of the new rubric is more student centered, and will foster greater understanding of the expectations in the art room, and of assessment criteria. You may view a full-sized rubric on the Rubrics page of this blog.

Exciting New Art Projects for Quarter 3!

We are wrapping up our Q2 art classes with some lessons on color theory (the color wheel) and some projects utilizing what we have learned. These include texture paintings and complementary color constructions (K-2), oil pastel drawings using tints and shades (Grades 3-4), Warm and cool color portraits (Grades 5-6) and Warhol-style celebrity portraits (Grades 7-8).

Coming Up!

We will kick off Q3 with poster projects for Black History Month at all grade levels, followed by poster and drawing contests for middle grades, and printmaking in grades K-6.

Thanks to all who attended the Grand Opening of our Jane Averill Student Art Gallery in the Ray annex on December 10, 2015. Our January 2016 show will feature works by our 3rd grade artists. Information on opening reception date and time to come!

Coming Soon! Ray Student Art Gallery and Printmaking

Ray Student Art Gallery In Process

Ms. Dana is very excited to announce that Ray School will be unveiling our new student art gallery very soon. The gallery will be located at the north end of the annex building on the second floor, just down the hall from the art room. We are currently working on gathering minimal furnishings for the space. We would like our gallery to become a destination for students and staff, a quiet place to chat or gather your thoughts…and see some awesome student art! We are looking for a donated area rug, 9×12 or larger and a small floor lamp. If you have gently used items you would like to donate, please contact Ms. Dana at Our goal is for each grade level to have their own art show (including an opening for family and friends with light refreshments) during the school year. As soon as we are up and running with our show schedule we will share the information here!

Coming soon to the The Art Room: Printmaking!Stamping-Apples-in-Paint-for-a-fun-Apple-Print

Thanks to a very generous donation from a Ray parent, we will be offering printmaking at all grade levels after Winter Break. K-2 will be making their prints using common objects such as fruits and vegetables, bubble wrap, wood blocks and plastic bottles. Upper grades will be building on the elements of 2-dimensional art they have been studying to create intaglio prints using foamboard.

Participation Rubric

Each art unit this year will consist of two to three 10 point lessons that introduce art concepts, teach an art technique, or present an art history or art interpretation lesson. These projects will be graded on a Participation Rubric. You may access the rubric by clicking on the Rubrics link on this site.
